Frankly, most online calligraphy teachers have weak fundamentals.
We read the books, attend the conferences and practice our own fundamentals every day. These are centuries-old techniques that you need to lock down at the beginning of your calligraphy journey. They'll pay huge dividends as you progress and expand into new, more modern styles.
How else can we say this.
There are much cheaper, even free options out there... but you get what you pay for.
We keep our courses under $100 USD to keep them accessible. We could charge less, but then this wouldn't be our full-time job, and we couldn't deliver the quality that people have come to expect from us.
We firmly believe that our classes deliver much more than $100 in value. We keep our prices low to help grow the community. We'd rather teach more new calligraphers!
We deliver personalized feedback on every assignment that you submit.
This coaching is our secret sauce.
Coaching will jump-start your learning experience. You'll still make beginner mistakes, but your instructor will catch those mistakes early before they become ingrained.
As Melissa likes to say, practice makes permanent. Practicing bad techniques will build bad muscle memory that is painful to unlearn.
Other online teachers publish videos, articles and e-books that don't provide any feedback on what you're doing wrong. We recommend saving those resources until after you've learned the fundamentals. You'll have a strong base to build on and you'll save months and years of practice time.
Melissa Esplin started teaching in-person classes back in 2010. She and her husband Chris (the programmer who created this website) launched IStillLoveCalligraphy.com in 2012 in response to growing class demand.
Melissa taught a few hundred students that first year, and it soon grew to over 1000 students per year from all over the world. Chris quit his programming job to work full-time on the business and Melissa partnered with Erika Paulsen to handle the teaching load.
Chris eventually purchased the Calligraphy.org domain name, which is where the website lives today.
We've expanded gradually over the years, creating our own calligraphy kits and adding classes.
We teach and practice calligraphy full-time. That's the dream, and we've stayed true to it.
Here are a few reviews that we've found online:
We are glad to refund your class purchase if you are at all dissatisfied. We'd rather have fewer, happier customers. We get so few refund requests that it barely matters.
We can't refund kit sales unless you ship it back, so that's not quite as awesome. We've priced the kits super low. That's the best we can do.
